Dementia support and social interaction have continued throughout the pandemic to over 800 people across North Staffordshire.

It’s been over 12 months since the first national lockdown was introduced in the UK.

At Approach Dementia Support we quickly adapted our services and continued to provide support throughout North Staffordshire.

We believe everyone should live their life the way they choose and all of our services help those affected by dementia to do so.

Since March 2020 more than 3,000 contacts have been made with people living with dementia, their carers and professionals.

Contact which has provided invaluable support and guidance with more than 800 carers and professionals accessing our service.

We adapted our training services to online and more than 150 carers have so far attended our online zoom carers training.

Regular carer calls have been made to 410 carers in the area and our very own well-being officer made more than 60 hospice and home visits.

In the summer of 2020 – and with thanks to support from the Community Fund of Staffordshire and National Emergency Trust – our charity was granted £3,730 from the NET Coronavirus Appeal to support those with dementia and their families during the Coronavirus pandemic.

Along with support from the Douglas Macmillan Hospice, Approach launched a new project which enabled people affected by dementia and their loved ones to take part in home based activities.

All of these activities were aimed at creating more interaction and diversional therapy in the home. When, in line with Government guidance, our face-to-face specialist dementia services had to be put on hold, we turned to the emergency fund to help us provide activity packs.

Since then over 250 activity packs have been delivered to our local communities and to support the well-being of those living with dementia. More than 50 people affected by dementia have attended music, dance, reminiscence and mindfulness sessions online.

Our 1:1 service resumed later in 2020 and more than 130 hours of support per week have since been provided.
