Approach provide 12 day care groups in various areas throughout the city of Stoke-on-Trent and surrounding areas. Each group runs with between 12 and 14 members and is run by a Day Care Coordinator who is supported by at least 1 Day Care Assistant and a team of volunteers.
What can a member expect?
Our emphasis is on activity, either individually or in small groups, enabling members to feel more able to cope. We provide a variety of activities, both physical and mental, using a person-centered approach, which helps to stimulate and improve the wellbeing of each individual member.
Each day’s pursuits are unhurried and without pressure, but are based on our knowledge and experience of many years.

What do we offer carers?
We offer help, support and general recognition of the difficulties carers cope with. They gain several hours of respite once or twice a week from 10.00am to 3.00pm.
What does a day consist of?
Transport is provided either by car or mini bus.
Physical and mental activities are varied throughout the day in an atmosphere that allows members to be stimulated in order to achieve personal development.
Group activities provided can include discussions, quizzes, exercise, games and singing, but wherever possible we try to individualise activities to meet the needs of members. This means that we try to find things that individuals like doing, so whether it be glass painting, model making or macrame we can help people retain and regain skills and help them to enjoy their hobbies.
Extra activities include outings for lunch, visits by various local people including health promoters and entertainers.
A hot lunch is provided during a relaxing social hour with more activities in the afternoon.
At 3pm members are driven home.

Community psychiatric nurses, general practitioners, social workers and families can all make referrals.
Approach runs a waiting list for most groups but once a place is available a visit will be made to the person’s home to assess their suitability for the group and to find out what they enjoy doing.
